Jayne Big Appel
The Big Appel is back in the Final Four even after the low-post performance beating anything in Stanford's long, memorable basketball history.
Jayne Appel had her career-high 46 points and 16 rebounds in the third highest-scoring performance in NCAA tournament history; overpowering Iowa State was helpless defense and securing Stanford's second straight Final Four appearances with a 74-53 victory in the Berkeley Regional final on Monday night.
Stanford's commanding center with neon-pink fingernails surpassed Candice Wiggins' game which left the game score record for the Cardinal with 33-4. Drake's Lorri Bauman and Texas Tech's Sheryl Swoopes had scored 50 points in 1982 and 47 in 1993 respectively in the NCAA tournament game, and now it’s the 6-foot-4 Jayne Appel, who made 19 of her 28 shots before being throng by her teammates at the final buzzer.

Suzy Merchant
The Michigan State women's athletics, the No. 9 seed Spartan women's basketball team upset Number 1-seeded Duke, 63-49, which spoiled the return of former MSU coach Joanne P. McCallie and breathing momentous fire into the program of second-year MSU coach Suzy Merchant for the first time in the history.
Aisha Jefferson the Junior forward celebrates as Michigan State upsets No. 1 seed Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Tuesday night at Breslin Center. In an aggressive, inspirational performance, the more physically-imposing Spartans held Duke without a field goal for the final 7:29, ending the game with a 16-2 run.
"From the opening tip, you could tell we were going to be fighting," said MSU forward Lauren Aitch. "The first play was a jump ball. We had to re-jump it. They saw the look in our eyes, that we weren't going to let up.
"From the opening tip, we knew we had this game. My teammates came out with so much fire. I was impressed."
Michigan State advances to the Sweet 16 for the third time in school history. MSU will play either Iowa State or Ball State in the Regional Semifinals next week in Berkeley, Calif.

Ryan Rossiter
The Ronald Moore has made some huge shots to beat the Buckeyes, though it was not so good game for the Saints. The #9 Siena shot 33% from the field, and it was their lowest percentage of the season. Siena’s 51 recoil are a season high, 21 of those being offensive rebounds which are also a season high.
Alex Franklin made 10 pts, 13 rebs and Ryan Rossiter made16 pts, 15 rebs both delivered double doubles. Rossiter hit all 6 free throws down the stretch. Evan Turner finished with 25 points to lead the Buckeyes.
Siena turned it over 21 times, more than #8 Ohio State’s 19, but the Saints were able to make critical shots down the stretch late in this ballgame. All five starters scored in double figures and Moore made his only two three point field goals in the overtime periods.
Someone doubted, but there’s no doubt this is one of the best games of all time for the Siena program.
This is Siena’s 2nd straight tournament appearance, first time the Saints made consecutive appearances. Siena is now 4-4 all time in the NCAA Tournament. Siena will play #1 seed Louisville Sunday at 5:20. More to come…

Siena Basketball
In the game tonight if Siena can get past Ohio then it would be the No. 1-seeded Louisville will be waiting in the NCAA Tournament second round. The Cardinals, the tournament’s top overall seed, ran away from Morehead State in the second half and have won by 74-54.
The Louisville middle Samardo Samuels was the lead of the team with 15 points. The Cardinals frontcourt was central, as Terrence Williams made 13 and Earl Clark 12.
The Cardinals, champions of the Big East, shot 58 percent from the field and 41.7 percent from 3-point range. Their vaunted defense limited Morehead State to just 38.5 percent shooting.

Gonzaga Bulldogs
Josh Heytvelt and Gonzaga Bulldogs winning in the season has inspired even the Zags know that they can win an alley fight, too.
Rugged Akron was upset over the stylish Gonzaga but the Bulldogs were loaded with what they feel is their most talented team in years, seemed set up for a third-straight first-round flop, and were up by six in the second half of the game.
“They came out throwing blows and had us rattled,” said Heytvelt. “Then we snapped out of it.”
Heytvelt scored 22 points, seven during a late game-breaking run and the Bulldogs rallied to get past the determined but ultimately overmatched Zips 77-64 on Thursday night in the South Regional.
The Zags are in their 11th consecutive NCAA tournament but had lost in the first round of the last two. “To get this first one is a really big deal,” said senior Jeremy Pargo, whose soaring right-handed slam punctuated the 19th win in 20 games for Gonzaga (27-5). “The last two years, we didn’t do this.”
Heytvelt simply sighed and said, “Oh, it was a weight off the chest.”
Gonzaga faces the winner of the Western Kentucky-Illinois game on Saturday. The Zags can only hope their next foe doesn’t have collars as blue as Akron’s.
“Well, hey, it feels good to win and move on. That’s what this tournament is about,” Gonzaga coach Mark Few said. “That was a grinder.”
Nate Linhart scored 13 points in the first half, but had no field goals after halftime for the Zips (23-13), who won the Mid-American Conference tournament to get in to its first NCAA tournament in 23 years.
“We were right there,” said Akron coach Keith Dambrot, who thought his team tired late. “We played with good passion and desire, but we just had a hard time when it really mattered. And you could tell they’ve been there before.”
Getting zapped in the first round by the Zips seemed possible for Gonzaga with 14:59 left. A 3-pointer from Akron’s Chris McKnight — who with his teammate and brother Brett grew up playing prison ball at his father’s workplace in Lancaster, Ohio — then a dunk by Mike Bardo and another 3 from Anthony Hitchens gave the Zips a 49-43 lead.
They seemed poised for the tournament’s first huge upset, and the Zips’ first NCAA win since Akron moved to Division I in 1980.
“I’m not going to lie. I was kind of flustered,” said Gonzaga’s Austin Daye who scored 10 points, three below his average, in 29 minutes.
“We definitely took care of business at the end.”
And how. Gonzaga scored the next seven points, a dunk by Heytvelt, a layup by the rushed Matt Bouldin and a 3-pointer from Steven Gray.
Suddenly, the Zags had their first lead of the half, 50-49, and Gonzaga’s previously stoic players were exhorting the crowd with arms raised skyward.
As those rabid fans in red from Spokane, Wash., kept roaring, Gonzaga’s decisive run kept rolling. Bouldin’s no-look pass found Heytvelt for a two-handed dunk and Michah Downs scored on an easy layup. Heytvelt stepped back for a deep 3-pointer, which he punctuated with a pirouette and three fingers raised in each hand at center court. Then Downs, who had 15 points, drained another 3.
Downs pounded he’s chest to celebrate Gonzaga leading 67-53 with five minutes left, and the Zags were on their way to the second round.
“We lost some discipline for two or three minutes on defense,” said Akron’s Steve McNees, who was 0-for-9 from the field. “That’s ball game against a team like that.”
