Suzy Merchant

The Michigan State women's athletics, the No. 9 seed Spartan women's basketball team upset Number 1-seeded Duke, 63-49, which spoiled the return of former MSU coach Joanne P. McCallie and breathing momentous fire into the program of second-year MSU coach Suzy Merchant for the first time in the history.

Aisha Jefferson the Junior forward celebrates as Michigan State upsets No. 1 seed Duke in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Tuesday night at Breslin Center. In an aggressive, inspirational performance, the more physically-imposing Spartans held Duke without a field goal for the final 7:29, ending the game with a 16-2 run.

"From the opening tip, you could tell we were going to be fighting," said MSU forward Lauren Aitch. "The first play was a jump ball. We had to re-jump it. They saw the look in our eyes, that we weren't going to let up.

"From the opening tip, we knew we had this game. My teammates came out with so much fire. I was impressed."

Michigan State advances to the Sweet 16 for the third time in school history. MSU will play either Iowa State or Ball State in the Regional Semifinals next week in Berkeley, Calif.
