The Big Appel is back in the Final Four even after the low-post performance beating anything in Stanford's long, memorable basketball history.
Jayne Appel had her career-high 46 points and 16 rebounds in the third highest-scoring performance in NCAA tournament history; overpowering Iowa State was helpless defense and securing Stanford's second straight Final Four appearances with a 74-53 victory in the Berkeley Regional final on Monday night.
Stanford's commanding center with neon-pink fingernails surpassed Candice Wiggins' game which left the game score record for the Cardinal with 33-4. Drake's Lorri Bauman and Texas Tech's Sheryl Swoopes had scored 50 points in 1982 and 47 in 1993 respectively in the NCAA tournament game, and now it’s the 6-foot-4 Jayne Appel, who made 19 of her 28 shots before being throng by her teammates at the final buzzer.
